Readership today is broader than it has ever been, with readers eager to consume a variety of content. The competitive book market can make it challenging for readers to find your work, so it’s important to make yourself discoverable. One way to create awareness and entice readers to read your work is to contribute to an anthology, which is a collection of short works from many authors . Whether in the genre you write or something new you explore, anthologies can offer you an opportunity to reach a greater audience. This seminar with author and publisher L.E. Perez will provide resources, benefits and tools for getting your short work into anthologies.

About the Presenter:
Laura Perez is an author/publisher with Palmas Publishing and Manra Moon Press . She spent fifteen years working in Corrections and Victim Services while privately working on several novels. In 2010, she was given the opportunity to pursue two passions in life, writing and martial arts. She is a 4th-degree black belt who loves to write fight scenes and act them out for realism. She has published ten full-length novels and multiple short stories, has spearheaded several thriller anthologies with a group of Indie Authors called 'The Thrill of the Hunt' and 'The Thrill of the Heart'. In addition, LE is a Freelance Writing/Publishing Consultant for Macmillan and hosts the Legion of Writers Podcast.

Author and editor Leah McNaughton Lederman was interested in the perspectives of female writers in regards to fear and the things that scare them. She decided to pull together a collection of short work around this theme, and started by inviting writers that she worked with to participate. She also reached out to writers outside of the horror genre and even to unpublished writers so that she could get a wide variety of perspectives and content. What resulted are two collections of very organic and cerebral stories in Café Macabre and Café Macabre II.

As an experienced editor, Lederman took on the role of editing the collection. Some writers benefited from her role as a writing coach, while others needed help with developmental editing. Some stories came to her fully formed and only needed light editing or proofreading. She also had the participants peer review each other's work as a part of the editing, to create the "café" feel. In addition, Lederman collaborated with an artist to create illustrations for each story that represent the theme or a pinnacle scene.

Growing up, Carl Prude Jr. would attend the altar call at his church and prayer workers would say three different phrases: “Hold on,” “let go,” and “press in.” The author, speaker, and president of The Work Life Company believes these phrases are helpful when entering and maintaining collaborative relationships. You have to know what to let go of, what to hold onto, and what to press into and pursue. Thinking about these three factors helps you determine what is most important, and how you can achieve your ultimate goal. Sometimes you may need to let go of a difficult partner, or other times you may need to press in and vouch for an idea about which you feel strongly, for example. Keep in mind your vision and how you want it to be presented to the public.

Susan Titus Osborn, an author, editor, and owner of The Christian Communicator, helped write a series of Christian-oriented issues books for women after connecting with Andrea Mullins of New Hope Publishers. The three books cover verbal abuse, suicide, and domestic abuse. Obsorn herself had experience with verbal abuse, which made the book Wounded by Words extra personal for her. Too Soon to Say Goodbye was meant for readers who had known someone who took their own life, but Osborn soon learned that there were readers who were considering taking their own lives and felt differently after reading the book. For the last installment of the series, Breaking Invisible Chains, Osborn got in touch with a domestic violence detective and made sure to include an appendix with information on where to find help.

Writing in solitude is difficult, but writing with a partner can present its own challenges. Working with a co-author can be a fantastic experience, as well. While there are ways to make a collaboration work, it’s easiest if you can find the right partner before any writing begins. There’s not a one-size-fits-all formula for a co-author, because every relationship is different. There are, however, some universal traits necessary for a successful partnership. Erik Deckers, author and president of Pro Blog Service, has experience in working with a collaborator on nonfiction books. He explains that the most important element of working with a partner is trust. This must be pervasive throughout all parts of the process. Authors need to trust their partners to meet deadlines and believe similar things about the book’s topic. Erik Deckers explains other ways that trust affects a co-author partnership in the clip below!
