Humor is one of the trickiest elements to include in a piece of writing because it’s easy to sound stilted and uncomfortable. Devorah Cutler-Rubenstein, writer, producer, director, and career coach, explains the secret to being naturally funny. It is, in part, to stop trying. “When you’re trying to be funny, you’re not funny,” says Cutler-Rubenstein. When people take on humor that isn’t their own, punchlines come across stiff and unnatural. To combat this, Cutler-Rubenstein encourages artists to be self-aware. She shares her journey toward discovering humor in her everyday life. As she uncovered what makes her funny, she also revealed what makes her characters funny. In her experience, humor is primarily found within drama. If comedy is tragedy over time, then dramatic stories have the possibility to be the funniest stories of all. As an example, she talks about her cancer diagnosis being the impetus for her standup comedy routine. Learn more about discovering your own humor style and weaving it into your stories in the clip below!
