Along with the light and the ocean one finds in Los Angeles, Doherty points to the legacy of literature in the city. Famous authors F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nathanael West, and Charles Bukowski all found inspiration while writing in LA. But there are great things happening in the present as well. Doherty sees younger writers in LA pushing out their own work without an agent. These writers may post on their websites or create a movie themselves.
