Author, speaker, and artist Laurie Finkelstein finds the process of writing and painting to be quite similar to each other. Both start with the seedling of an idea. Finkelstein will let that idea percolate in her mind for a few weeks or months, until something more solid develops. Then, if she is writing, she will create an outline. For a painting, she will create a thumbnail sketch and start planning out the design of her art. The execution of the two is slightly different: Finkelstein will usually write sequentially, but for painting she will start with the larger shapes and work her way down to the finest details.
