Author Ken Liu has published over one-hundred short stories, novelettes and novellas in his career and two full-length novels. He has received numerous awards for his work including the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy awards, but writing hasn't always come easy to him. Early on in his career he wrote a short story that he believed would catapult him to fame. He became obsessed and even after receiving multiple rejections from various markets, he continued to focus all of his creative energy on this one piece. The publishing rejections continued and Liu eventually gave up on writing all together. Years later he began writing again but approached the process very differently, focusing on experimentation and enjoyment. Because his motivation and goals were no longer driven by external things that were out of his control, his creativity flowed and he began writing short fiction stories that started to sell. Liu's advice to other writers: 1) set goals that are within your control, 2) don't focus solely on getting published, and 3) if you get stuck, move on to another story.
