Every writer uses a different process to get himself or herself to the end of a manuscript. While inspiration can come from anywhere, getting it onto paper can be significantly harder. Whether a plotter or a pantser, each writer needs to make intentional choices about his or her writing style. Howard V. Hendrix, award-winning science fiction author and English professor, explains his writing process for short stories versus long fiction. He pulls from everyday experiences such as overheard conversations, journal entries, and even dreams. He says, “I’ve learned to write in the dark. If I come out of sleep and there’s something in my head, I’ll write it down in the dark so my wife won’t have the lights come on.” Hendrix considers himself more of a pantser, making notes as he goes. This is easier for him with short stories, which he can breeze through on a first draft, but he’ll sketch an outline for longer stories. He also has a unique way of completing a long-form story that keeps the editing part of his brain from taking over the creative part of his brain. Watch the clip below to learn more.
