When author Jonathan Brown first started writing, he followed the advice “write what you know.” He has written books about a character who is a drummer, and another who is a bouncer – both of which Brown himself is or has been. But Brown came to realize you don’t necessarily have to write just about what you know. It’s possible to do enough research to become an expert in something you don’t have firsthand experience with, and write a book based on your research and new knowledge. After Brown has done his research, he prefers creating an outline before writing. Along the way, as he builds out the story, he will build out his characters as well by creating a history and synopsis of each character. While most of this information does not make it into the book, it helps Brown create believable characters who can help move the plot forward.
