Before packing your bags and moving out to Hollywood, author and film post-production supervisor Sheryl Benko advises to get your feet wet somewhere else. If there is a show or movie being filmed in your area, try to get a job on that set first, even if it’s as a production assistant or intern – nobody needs to know if or how much you got paid, and this is something to add to your resume and help set yourself apart from the crowd. Once you’re in LA, make use of any opportunity you have to learn more about the industry. Attend film Q&A panels and take any chance you have to work on a production. You will always get something out of these experiences that you didn’t have before.
