Bestselling author and Morgan James Publishing founder David Hancock encourages authors to increase their networks by meeting people outside of their current circles. They can then utilize who these new contacts know, leverage their platforms, and hopefully improve their own connections. The best place, he says, is to go where other authors are — conferences, retreats, writing groups, etc. Networking is a great way to avoid common pitfalls, learn from other authors, and get introduced to other authors' audiences. Hancock believes building relationships in-person is a very powerful tool that can lead to word of mouth marketing and more opportunities for authors and their work.

Writing and publishing a book can be a long, challenging journey, but it's important to know you don't have to travel alone. Caren Wolfe, Vice President of Marketing with W Publishing Group, a commercial nonfiction imprint of Thomas Nelson, encourages her author clients to network with other authors and support their work. This is a great way to build a valuable tribe of individuals with similar goals and experiences, and hopefully get their support in return when you release a new book. In addition, this community can offer encouragement when needed and mentoring to guide you and keep you focused. She recommends following and connecting with authors at all levels to get the most benefit - bestselling authors, first-time authors, and everyone in between.

Assistant Director Leah McNaughton Lederman says the organization's goal is to unite writers and provide a thriving community of networking, resources, and support. Whether new to writing or more experienced, the organization's workshops help writers improve their craft and are taught by bestselling and established authors.

In addition, the organization offers manuscript evaluations through a team of editors, and an annual "agent fest" where writers can pitch to agents live, or attend workshops to learn about query letters, the author-agent relationship, and more.

Lederman herself is involved in many other organizations in the region including the Indiana Writers Center, Lafayette Writers Studio, and Of Rust and Glass, a creative collective celebrating all types of artists and writers.
Taylor University's Professional Writers Conference takes place every July and is a great opportunity for authors to connect with each other, network, and learn more about different areas of writing. Taylor Professor Donna Arthur Downs says many alumni come back each year to speak or teach. Although its a smaller conference, she says it covers all types of writing and even offers opportunities to meet one-on-one with authors and industry professionals.

Downs strongly encourages writers to attend in-person conferences as they are crucial for networking and figuring out where your writing fits into the publishing world. Most conferences offer opportunities to meet and talk with various professionals such as editors, agents, authors, and publishers, which can be a great way to get endorsements and mentorship.

The key to networking and good working relationships in Hollywood is to build credibility and trust with others. Who you know and who trusts you will greatly impact your ability to get new projects and opportunities, per talent manager, writer, and producer John Sill-up. Once you do develop relationships, it's important to nurture them and continue to contribute quality work. Sill-up also recommends having some sort of support team to help find opportunities, such as a manager and agent.
www.authorlearningcenter.com/.../CreatingSuccessfulCollaborationsintheEntertainmentIndustry.mp4

Hollywood is tough for writers, especially those just starting out. It can be very challenging to get your foot in the door and get your work seen when you aren't a part of the "inner circle". As talent manager, writer, and producer John Sill-up explains, there are groups of individuals in the film and television industry that tend to create monopolies of content, making it hard for others to break-in and find success. The larger studios and companies often create their own content internally, and don't have a need for outside content or ideas. Sill-up recommends protecting your work and being as professional as possible.
www.authorlearningcenter.com/.../ChallengesWritersFaceintheEntertainmentIndustry.mp4

A high-maintenance person, explains bestselling author, TEDx Speaker, and special advisor Dr. Mark Goulston, is difficult to please and easy to upset. When you’re very successful, you may be able to get away with acting like this when collaborating with others, but he doesn’t recommend it. Instead, be low-maintenance: appreciative, patient, and aware of the fact that everyone is doing the best they can. Very few people feel that the world is grateful to them or enjoys them, so Dr. Goulston makes a point to show his gratefulness when working with and receiving help from others.

You can begin building goodwill with fellow authors by leaving supportive book reviews, explains bestselling author, TEDx Speaker, and special advisor Dr. Mark Goulston. A video review, on Amazon or elsewhere, stands out more than a written review and can leave a greater impact. When Dr. Goulston leaves a video review for a book he has genuinely enjoyed, he wants to make sure the author knows he understood his or her message and how the book affected him personally. It can also be helpful, Dr. Goulston explains, to point out specific pages or passages from the book that you enjoyed, to highlight what parts of the book resonated with you the most. Many authors will return the favor, giving your book a boost as well.

On Twitter, users can participate in “Twitter chats,” public Twitter conversations around one unique hashtag. Every Sunday evening, author, goal coach, and project catalyst Debra Eckerling hosts a Goal Chat Twitter Chat. Since January 2018, she uses this time to ask participants what their biggest win was in the past week, what are their upcoming goals, and also discuss a special topic. Eckerling says many people join the chat because of the support it offers. If you’re a writer who faces doubt from others in your life, joining a Twitter chat like this can give you the encouragement and confidence you need to keep going.
