Per author, comedy writer, and columnist James Breakwell, "Free time is a myth." He warns aspiring writers that a designated time to write will not magically appear...unless you carve it out for yourself. Breakwell was able to spend time during his day job working on his writing craft and brand of humor, while also drawing inspiration from time spent with his kids, but this may not work for everyone. He recommends treating writing as a priority and accepting that there may be other things you have to give up in order to find time to write. He believed in his work and spent years building a following on social media before going viral and landing a book deal. If you make the writing important, he says, you will start to reach milestones of accomplishment such as building a loyal following and getting media attention. Breakwell himself still juggles both his day job and his writing, but hopes to make the transition to full-time writer in the future.
