Mackerel magazine editor, ghostwriter, and founder of The Creative Voice Carolyn Oei has written in a variety of nonfiction formats throughout her career. Two types of nonfiction writing that often get confused, she says, are academic and journalistic writing. They seem similar on the surface but are actually quite different when you break down the elements and intended purpose. Academic writing, which includes research papers, reports, and dissertations, is less focused on creating beautiful sentences and more concentrated on stating the facts. In journalistic writing, which is Oei's preference as a former journalist, there is more room to integrate your voice and write beautiful things. The tone is also quite different between the two formats. While academic writing is meant to educate and inform, journalistic writing not only informs, but also fuses facts with personal opinions and presents it in a compelling manner. No matter what you are writing, Oei says, the key to impactful work is doing proper research. She recommends reading and observing as much as you can.
