When writing her first memoir, Leaving the Hall Light On, it was painful to recall her experiences with her son's mental illness and suicide. What comforted Sharples during this time was reminding herself that if she could help just one person with her book, the pain and discomfort would all be worth it. From start to finish, it took nine years for Sharples to complete her memoir. She knew it was important to keep at it, and also knew that the process of dealing with emotions and upsetting memories would take time.
