Gregg Gonzales, the founder of The SpeakEasy Method, sees many writers struggle with finding their voice as a writer. They are either trying too hard to sound like someone they are not, or they come across as inauthentic. His mission with The SpeakEasy Method is to teach individuals and writers how to connect more authentically with the story they have to tell. The more you include, the more you’ll have to work with during the editing stage. It is much easier to edit away words instead of having to add more in. Another advantage to this approach is that by describing your experiences as in-depth as possible, more readers will be able to relate to your story – you never know how many people are experiencing life in the same way that you did!

The most difficult subjects can have the biggest payoff, says author Madeline Sharples. When writing her first memoir, Leaving the Hall Light On, it was painful to recall her experiences with her son's mental illness and suicide. What comforted Sharples during this time was reminding herself that if she could help just one person with her book, the pain and discomfort would all be worth it. From start to finish, it took nine years for Sharples to complete her memoir. She knew it was important to keep at it, and also knew that the process of dealing with emotions and upsetting memories would take time.
