Aspiring memoirists often worry about their story causing controversy or hurt feelings, especially with family and friends. Author and writing teacher Georgia Lee advises new writers to consider the risk involved when telling your truth, but don't let that deter you. Instead, talk to those individuals that you are including in your story so that they are aware of your project prior to publishing. Lee had the privilege of working with Augusten Burroughs, author of the bestselling, critically acclaimed memoir Running with Scissors, who said, "If you're not willing to let it all out, just don't write." Tell your story, Lee says, but be sure to go beyond just using the writing as an outlet or as therapy. You need to go beyond your own needs and think of the reader.
