Memoir is a unique genre of writing that includes topics such as family relationships, grief and loss, and spiritual experiences. Considered to be creative nonfiction, a memoir is based on the author's truth. It is not the entire story of his or her life, however, but a snippet or portion that includes an underlying theme. Author and editor Sara Anne Fox shares some of her favorite memoirs and explains why these books appeal to her as a reader. To capture readers with your true story, Fox says there has to be a point, a distinct perspective or theme, and a lesson learned. Including these elements will allow readers to relate to the material in some way. She warns aspiring memoirists to avoid being self-indulgent in their writing and to avoid a journalistic approach. If you stick to just reporting the facts without creating an emotional connection, you will bore readers. Watch the clip below to learn more tips for writing an engaging memoir.
