Part of building your author platform and brand is making yourself an authority figure on your book's nonfiction topic. One way to build credibility is to start doing speaking engagments on the topic. Find relevant organizations that might be interested in having you speak, suggests author and book publicist Marlan Warren, or, hire a publicist that can help connect you to these organizations. This strategy can even apply to fiction authors. If you've done a vast amount of research and fact checking for your book, use this research to build an authoritative presentation. And, don't forget to put your unique spin on the content to differentiate yourself. Often times, potential readers need to believe that you are an authority figure on your topic if they are going to invest in your book.
