Marc Nair on How He Got Started Performing at Poetry Slams

Singaporean poet and photographer Marc Nair entered his first poetry slam contest before really understanding what these events entailed. He had been writing for a few years but had never performed spoken word poetry, so his first poetry slam became a huge lesson in the techniques that artists use. Poetry slams are competitions in which poets perform their work using word play techniques such as intonation and voice inflection to enhance their reading. The most important thing Nair took away from his first poetry slam was the very visceral, live response he got from the audience. He was hooked by this feeling of directly connecting with listeners and started writing and performing more spoken word poetry. Now a seasoned poetry slammer, Nair has performed spoken word in more than ten countries and has represented Singapore in international poetry slam competitions. He is also a founding member of the local spoken word troupe Party Action People.
