The decision whether or not to get an MFA is a tough one for writers. Is it really valuable? Do we need it to get published? For author Wendy Tokunaga, MFA’s are a privilege, not a necessity. She says, "I didn't go into the MFA program because I thought, this is going to get me published." Rather, Wendy enjoyed studying literature and the craft of writing and believed that the knowledge was useful regardless of publishing goals. However, she recognizes that getting an MFA is not for everyone, and offers some alternatives for those who do not have the resources.
