Author and film post-production supervisor Sheryl Benko recommends exposing yourself to as many screenplays as possible before you write your own. Benko says one of the best investments she ever made was purchasing Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting by Syd Field because it helped her gain a foundational understanding of screenplays and how they should look. The other piece of advice Benko stresses for honing your craft is having others read your work. Give your screenplay to people you trust to be honest, constructive, and insightful. Then use their feedback to make your work even better. However, remember that you will never be able to please everybody.
