Morgan James Publishing founder and bestselling author David Hancock believes there are proven steps new authors can take to increase their chances of success. First, he encourages authors to write the "right" book. This means understanding what your target readers need and ensuring the book benefits both you and the reader.

Second, he recommends authors start marketing the moment you decide to write the book. Hancock believes authors need to start planting seeds of authority and let others hold you accountable during the writing process. This "authority bridge" is the first bridge authors must cross in order to find success. Once you have a following that becomes invested in your journey, you can work on crossing the second bridge, which is the "permissions bridge". You have now earned the right to ask your followers to support you by buying the book when it becomes available. Hancock believes that if you develop relationships over time and provide valuable content, people will be eager and willing to buy your book.

The book market continues to be a competitive place where new books and emerging authors can easily be overlooked. Nelson Books Senior Marketing Director John Andrade advises authors in the Christian nonfiction space to approach the journey with grit and determination. It's a busy world with reduced attention spans, so authors need to figure out how to break through the noise. He encourages authors to persevere and continue to work at it every day. Be disciplined to write, get feedback, network, create awareness locally, and press on.

He also cautions authors to be patient—success won't happen overnight. Even authors on the bestseller lists have years and years of hard work that have factored into their success.

If you are considering publishing a book on your own through either a self-publishing service provider or online DIY platform, it's important to consider your long-term goals as an author, per attorney Greg Victoroff. Do you wish to make a career out of writing, or do you only have one book in you? If your goal is to build a career, you might want to set yourself up as a small publishing company. He cautions authors to be realistic about the amount of income that can be made when publishing books. The costs associated with printing books can be very high, making it difficult to make a profit. He advises focusing more on your love of writing or your love for your topic instead of focusing on growing a profitable business. He also recommends publishing digitally to start and then expanding to paperback once you've made some money.

Per author and editor Troy Lambert, when you step back and look at an author business from a big picture perspective, it's the same as any other consumer business. There are 3 key elements that must be integrated for the business to be successful: 1) production, 2) product, and 3) promotion. Production includes not only the writing of the book, but all of the design aspects as well. Authors must then choose how they are going to produce their book, and there are many publishing paths available to authors today. Authors must also consider how to get their books into the hands of readers which involves decisions on distribution channels. Once the plan to get a book to readers is mapped out, authors must strategize the marketing and promotion - how are readers going to know about the book?

Lambert believes that authors should be heavily involved in every aspect of their business because they know their books best. If you are truly interested in turning your author business into a full-time career, Lambert says to be prepared to take on a tremendous amount of responsibility, and to discuss your plan with those around you so they are on board.

WordWise Media owner and literary agent Steve Hutson believes any writer that wants to publish a book needs to attend conferences to get educated on writing craft and the industry. He also recommends that he or she join a critique group or have a mentor. While these efforts will require commitment, time away from other parts of your life, and maybe an investment, they will go a long way in preparing you - and your manuscript - for publishing. Being a writer means you are a self-employed business owner, says Hutson. As an agent, he can immediately tell which writers have done their due diligence and which haven't. The ones that have are more likely to get his attention.
www.authorlearningcenter.com/.../TheImportanceofLearningtheBusinessSideofBookWriting.mp4
