If you want to publish and have budget limitations, then I would suggest you look at a DIY solution such as Lulu.com. You can use their tool to format your book, upload it and make it available for sale.

I have never read anything about an average salary for a first time author so I can't really comment on that. As for illustrations, you can sometimes find resources at local colleges or on sites like Fivvr.com
Hello Keith Ogorek, i like to know if the price of my books titled The Best Marriage flavours Volumes 1 2 3 and The Best Health Flavours Volumes 1 2 3 can be brought back to the standard book prices. This had been a discouragement to me from paying the marketing fee. I am also having up to ten book manusctipts with xlibris publisher in United Kingdom, both hand written and electronics manusctipts. I hadn't been paid any royalty since 2015 my books are published.
