From Page to Screen: Taking Your Story to Hollywood - podcast

Hollywood producers often look to literature for their next big movie. The trick is getting their attention. Pen Densham, Hollywood producer, writer, and director, talks about how to sell your book to Hollywood and the right way to initiate contact with people in the movie industry. He says that how you approach producers and directors is key in selling your book-to-movie idea. If you want people to pay attention, you need to approach them personally and figure out how to translate your project into something that excites them. Find a director you like and whose projects are in the style of your book, and then write them a letter to pitch your book. If you have someone willing to look at your book, you need to manage their perceptions of it, because it’s all about perception. You need to sum up your story in a catchy and appealing way so that the buyer sees it as a financial opportunity. If you can make your project seem like the logical next step in their personal journeys, they’ll definitely take a look at it.

  • Hello: Helen Collier I really don't think it matters what ethnic you're you've written a book and I hope and pray when your book is chosen it's because they like your work and they see good potentials in you. God Bless You with your books.
  • I have published my first book and I really think it's movie material, and Tyler Perry is one of my idol. I was trying to find out how to reach him by mail. I wanted to send him a sign copy of my book. I really think if he would just take a look at it he will see something that he like. How do I go about doing this. I also have another book on it's way the publisher already has it and I'm working on my third book. I am hoping and Praying that it catches someone eye.

Hi Andrew -- Mr Densham was kind enough to do a video interview for us but he's not on staff here at the Author Learning Center, so I'm afraid he isn't available for replying to direct questions like this. However, check out the comment made lower in this thread to a similar question from Aikao, it has some resources listed.

Hi Ely. One thing to consider is that Hollywood doesn't always buy the "book". They are buying the idea, the story in the book. If they like that they'll get a screenwriter to write the story for Hollywood purposes. So even if the book is not translated to English, you can pitch the story in the book to Hollywood. Check out the resources I noted in response to an earlier question on this thread (posted to Aikao's question) as a starting point.
