Dr. Stacey Simmons on the Portrayal of Women in Film and Television

Writer and psychotherapist Dr. Stacey Simmons believes that women are being more fairly portrayed in media than they were in the past. Up until three or four years ago, she says, women were made “flat” in entertainment. They were predictable archetypes, and didn’t showcase the diversity of women in real life. But Dr. Simmons is hopeful now that she has seen more accurate and equitable representation in shows and movies. She points out the Netflix series GLOW as an example. The largely female cast is portrayed as deep women with unique personalities. This makes for a richer story.
