Book Signings: An Overview - article

Book signings are, at face value, about you personalizing your book for your buyers. You may also choose to read aloud a short selection from the book and answer questions. But think beyond the most basic definition of book signings. They are about getting people excited about you and your book and giving them a chance to meet you. All sorts of people come to book signings, those who collect signed first editions (especially of lesser-known authors), some who have read your work and enjoyed it, and others who are curious to hear what you have to say. They are often the people who will purchase your book at the event and look forward to getting it signed, too.

Book signings matter for a number of reasons. They show that you have the ability to draw crowds, which is important for a store when they are choosing which books to stock, especially independent stores. Book signings get people to come together over your work, and audience members will often enjoy it as a pleasant outing by bringing a friend or family member. One of the most important aspects of a book signing is that it gives you the opportunity to connect with your current and potential fans. Being able to shake the hand of someone whose work they admire makes buyers want to purchase more publications with your name on them.

Book signings are traditionally held at bookstores and libraries, but they can be held just about anywhere. Did you write a natural foods cookbook? Maybe a signing in a fancy grocery store such as Whole Foods is possible. Instead of reading before you sign the books, a cooking demonstration may be in order. If you’ve written a historical fiction work that fits with a particular museum, ask about having an event there. And your book about the film industry could have the perfect signing event in an independent movie theater. Many universities and community colleges enjoy hosting events for authors to introduce new books and ideas, and they are easy to promote on campus. Think outside the box. If you can put chairs in a room with a table and podium at the front, you can hold a book signing.
