Developing Your Reputation and Message as an Author

One of the most important aspects of being an author is your branding or public image. Award-winning journalist, broadcast personality, and National Reading Movement Ambassador Michelle Martin has had the privilege of working with many authors both in Singapore and worldwide throughout her career, and is a master at managing her own, very public image. For new authors, Martin recommends envisioning the type of reputation that you want in the industry and the message you want to communicate, and work back from there. Then, take the necessary steps to get there and be consistent along the way. All writers have a story as to why they write or why they write a particular book, so figure out your story and make sure everything you do aligns with this narrative, Martin says. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there to make a connection with readers, and most importantly, enjoy what you are doing.

  • Thank You. I appreciate comments.

  • Thank you so much for this guiding advice

  • Hi Michelle, thank you this is truly enlightening for me...must admit the branding term doesn't work for me, if sort of scared me, brands being so out there and shiny and so attached to marketing...I acknowledge I would love to market my book but I felt I didn't have the skills to create a brand as such.. Your video hit a key for me when you asked "how is your name synonymous with your work?"  and to think about my public reputation and envisioning the sort of reputation I want to have as a future author, how to develop authentic reputation that connects with my life and the message I am sharing and where I want my writing to take me in the future...andto work backwards from there...so key for me, your inspiring words were music to my ears. Many Thanks Louise.
