It’s a great time to be a writer. There are more ways than ever before to market your product, with new markets opening up every day. Here’s a list of resources you can use to get your writing published.

1. Writers Market.

Writer’s Market is a veritable bible of information for writers of all types who are trying to get published. Not only does it contain listings for book publishers and consumer and trade magazines, it also includes sections on contests, awards and literary agents.

2. Literary Marketplace.

Literary Marketplace, or LMP, bills itself as “The Directory of the American Book Publishing Industry.” It boasts over 12,500 names, addresses, and email addresses of publishers, as well as names and information on over 22,000 decision makers.

3. International Literary Marketplace.

The international counterpart to the LMP, the ILMP, includes the same types of information as its sister publication, but for 180 countries around the globe. It includes over 15,000 listings of publishers, literary agents, booksellers, book clubs, major libraries and library associations.

4. Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory.

Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory provides detailed and authoritative information on periodicals published in the Unites States and internationally. It covers all subjects, regular or irregular publications, , whether circulated by paid subscription or free of charge. The hardcover edition contains four volumes and covers more than 220,000 periodicals.

5. The Standard Periodical Directory.

The Standard Periodical Directory is an over 2,000 page directory of American and Canadian periodicals. It includes information on more than 62,000 magazines, newspapers, journals, newsletters and directories. It covers all topics, from Accounting to Zoology.

6. Gale Directory of Publications and Broadcast Media.

The Gale Directory of Publications and Broadcast Media provides listings for print media, radio and television stations, as well as cable companies. The information provided by the Gale Directory is extensive, including the email addresses and fax numbers of key players included in the listings.

7. Working Press of the Nation.

Now known as Bowker’s News Media Directory, this three volume publication covers newspapers, magazines, newsletters, television and radio. Like the directories listed above, it provides comprehensive contact information and other relevant details about the print and broadcast media.

Note: With the exception of Writer’s Market, the directories listed above are most commonly available through libraries. With prices ranging from $600.00 to $2,000.00, they are not targeted generally for the trade market.

8. WritersNet

If you’re searching for an agent or an editor, WriterNet is a great place to start. This helpful directory lets you search by location or by topic.

9. Firstwriter.com

Similar to WritersNet, but with a handy navigation bar that lets you select any category from Agents and Editors to Writing Tips and Contests.

10. Freelance Writing.

Unlike services like Guru or elance, Freelance Writing deals only with writers, and offers a comprehensive list of services to the freelance industry.
