The Differences between Book Wholesalers and Distributors

The publishing industry is complicated. Whether an author is traditionally published or self-published, trying to sell a book is difficult in a system that requires so much prior knowledge. Half of the journey toward publishing success is simply understanding the vocabulary. Most people aren’t aware that there is a difference between wholesalers and distributors and they often inadvertently switch the terms. Amy Collins, President of New Shelves Books, lays out the difference between a wholesaler and a distributor. A wholesaler buys a book from a publisher and supplies it to bookstores, libraries, or whoever else may want your book. A distributor does similar tasks but works for the publisher. In addition, a distributor provides many services a wholesaler doesn’t. This difference is critical as you attempt to place your book on retail shelves. Watch the video below to learn more from industry expert Amy Collins.
