Publish Your Book: Avenues to Pursue - article

Who do you want to reach, and how do you want to reach them? That’s the first question you need to ask. If you want to reach a mass audience through bookstores, you have to go with a major publisher. It’s the best way. They have the distribution. They have the mass media. They have what you want. But if you have to get a book out quick, then you want to self-publish using a print-on-demand service or get the e-book out right away. I just put out an e-book on Kindle the other day. It takes 20 minutes, and the book is out there. I don’t think it’s sold any copies yet, but it’s out there. I can promote it now. I can pitch it. I can do media around it if I want to. So it depends, to some extent, what audience you want to reach and how you want to reach them. If you already have a following on the internet, then you probably want to go with print-on-demand or e-books. If you want to build a career as a writer, you probably want to reach a mass market audience, in which case, you probably want to go with a New York publisher that gives you instant credibility, which you don’t necessarily get when you self-publish.
