What an Author Can Expect After Landing a Book Deal With a Traditional Publisher

Wondering what the publishing journey looks like after you land a traditional publishing deal? If so, read on!

As an Associate Publisher with the W Publishing Group, a commercial nonfiction imprint of Thomas Nelson, Stephanie Newton works with many authors. When her imprint partners with a new author or an established author with a new book, her team's focus is on author care. It's important the authors are clear about next steps and that nothing is hidden.

When working with an author, Newton wants them to be comfortable with the process and feel confident that she and her team are very experienced. The first step is to provide timelines, next steps, and some coaching or mentoring as needed. She is able to help authors with a variety of challenges, depending on their specific needs. Newton also discusses early on how the author wants to collaborate so that she can support them in the best way possible.

Once these initial steps are complete, an author's manuscript will go through global structural editing before it goes to copyediting. In addition to editorial support, her imprint's authors get publicity, marketing, and sales support.

Whether a completed manuscript is submitted or a dynamic book proposal is presented, Newton enjoys helping authors shape their manuscripts for success.
