How Awards and Accolades Can Benefit a Writer’s Career

Author and technical writer Neil V. Young compares the search for an editor or agent to the process of job searching. Your writing sample or manuscript is like a resume, and the query letter is like a cover letter. If you have received any awards or have any unique accomplishments, be sure to include these in your materials; Young recommends mentioning awards and accolades in the third paragraph of a query letter. Depending on who you are sending your work to, you may also include other writing or awards that are not directly related to your book. For example, Young has included work from his job as a technical writer to show his creativity and flexibility.
