Common Elements of High and Low Fantasy Storytelling

The fantasy genre of storytelling can be broken down into high fantasy and low fantasy. A high fantasy story takes place in an alternate world with alternate laws of science, magic, and creatures. A low fantasy story may include the alternate laws of science, magic, and creatures, but takes place in the modern world, such as the Harry Potter series. Per author Chrome Oxide, writers must also include the same elements of storytelling that are present in other genres, such as fully developed characters and conflict, to meet all of the expectations of fantasy readers.
