Middle-Grade Co-Authors “A.J. Low” Share Their Writing and Editing Process

When co-authors Felicia Low-Jimenez and Adan Jimenez (A.J. Low) started writing their middle-grade series Sherlock Sam together, they alternated writing the chapters. After the first few books, they progressed to each writing a few chapters at a time, focusing on their specific strengths with Felicia often writing the beginnings and Adan the endings. This separation in writing has allowed each of them to take some time away and focus on other things they enjoy doing. Now thirteen books into their award-winning series, the pair have become better at blending their writing voices. Because the stories are mysteries, Felicia and Adan do outline and plot plan together for each book. Working with experienced editors through their Singaporean publisher Epigram Books, has been instrumental in making their series a success with children. Being open to editorial input has led to enhanced characters and tighter storylines.
