Avoiding Nonessential Backstory in Writing Fiction


When building a complex world or plot for your story, you might need to include some backstory throughout so that your readers understand what's happening. Science fiction and fantasy author Chrome Oxide offers a word of caution with this. Too much Info-dumping and backstory will slow your story down, he says. Dialogue and action are what is most interesting to readers, so he recommends using your characters' conversations to explain situations and the world around them. You can sprinkle in some backstory throughout, but he advises avoiding long paragraphs of backstory.
