Switching Careers to be an Author - podcast

P.J. Hoover never had dreams of becoming an author. In fact, she fell into writing; she had a full-time job as an engineer and two children--it never dawned on her to pick up a new a new project. But with free time on her hands and having immersed herself in J.R.R. Tolkein's Lord of the Rings trilogy, she wondered if she could create her own world. Hoover began to write for a few hours every night and soon realized she could. She credits her engineering background for maintaining discipline to keep moving forward.

  • I have been writing since 1996 and have had a short story published by a publisher and 4 poems published by The National Library of Poetry but my work got in the way and I did not get back into writing until 2015. I have several stories on the go with many others in the works. I am definitely researching to see if I should send out a manuscript or self-publish. I have to say I am leaning towards self-publishing because of the control issues. I love that you changed your career. I am a bookkeeper/tax preparer and I want a change also.
  • I find it hard to focus on my writing while my working hours are changing from morning to afternoon and evening shifts and as I work in the aged care sector it doesn't look like changing anytime soon. I think I need to start getting some discipline in somewhere, it's just finding where it fits and becoming true to myself and the goals I want to fulfil.
  • I am temporarily on leave from work and need to rest, so this is my opportunity to sit and write!
  • This is inspiring, Thank you. My weakness is inconsistent discipline in focusing on the writing of my novel. Time to put the boots on and take discipline on. My hours are easier as a writer than my job, anyone with advice in sticking to focus on writing?
  • Mrs Hoover, A bit of talent and a lot of consistency. They are the main ingredients to write books and sell them enough to live from them. Great tips. Nicole Audet www.nicoleaudet.com
