While the process can differ greatly for each writer, there are proven practices that help writers reach their goal of completing a manuscript. Author Phillip Done began writing while still working full-time as a teacher so he initially struggled to find the time and motivation. He advises new writers to follow the advice that ultimately worked for him, which came from famous writer Anne Lamott - "Butt in chair." This may seem like an obvious suggestion but it means commitment, persistence, and discipline, no matter how creative you are or aren't feeling. Done believes these are the keys for reaching your publishing goals. He also advises writers to be willing to throw away the previous day's writing and to understand the value of editing and rewrites.
