For a memoir to be compelling, it must have a purpose greater than the story itself. One Signal Vice President and Publisher Alessandra Bastagli was told by a mentor that there is a difference between the "I" memoir and the "Eye" memoir. The "Eye" memoir presents a counternarrative or unique perspective to the reader which is more engaging than just a story.
For example, she's published memoirs from an undocumented immigrant in America and from an indigenous writer questioning identity. These authors brought a different perspective and original ideas that can speak to a lot of readers.
Bastagli also believes memoir authors can benefit greatly from knowing what's currently on bookshelves and what's missing from the conversation. Presenting something fresh or original can go a long way in getting your book proposal noticed by traditional publishers.
