Herbie J Pilato, a writer, producer, TV host, and president of Television, Ink., has written full-length biographies about two major classic TV stars: Twitch Upon a Star: The Bewitched Life and Career of Elizabeth Montgomery and Mary: The Mary Tyler Moore Story. Because Pilato knew Montgomery personally, the book is not as objective as Moore’s biography. When writing about Mary Tyler Moore, Pilato was excited to be able to document her life beyond The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. A good biography, Pilato says, has a compelling story and subject – ideally a celebrity or someone who has lived an exciting life or made a monumental contribution to the world.
