The Importance of Author Platform and Book Structure for Nonfiction Writers

Building your author platform is extremely important for both fiction and nonfiction authors, explains Redwood Publishing owner Sara Stratton. Your online platform is where you build your tribe, and find the readers who will follow your journey and buy your book as soon as it is released. For nonfiction authors specifically, Stratton says following a certain structure can lead to success in building a fan base and your career. There are four parts to a nonfiction book:

  1. Begin by establishing your credibility and why readers should trust you.
  2. Then explain the problem or issue you have seen or experienced.
  3. Next, share how you addressed, solved, or eased the problem.
  4. End with a subtle call to action – how can readers get in touch with you and perhaps book you for a speaking event?
