Three Effective Marketing Channels for Fiction and Nonfiction Authors

Literary agent Eric Lincoln Miller of 3ibooks believes that the best marketing plan for authors involves doing three types of promotion simultaneously - 1) Print, 2) Events, and 3) Online. Print promotion includes postcards, bookmarks, business cards, giveaways, and more. Events include in-person festivals, conferences, speaking engagements, and book signings. Online promotion includes your website or social media presence, email marketing, and podcasts. Executing initiatives in all three channels will help maximize your ability to create awareness for you and your book, and ultimately, help you sell more books.

Miller finds that creating a marketing plan for nonfiction can sometimes be a little easier because the target audience is usually more obvious and there may already be a market for your book. For fiction authors, he says knowing your target audience is very important, as is building a community around your book.
