Book Marketing: Do It Yourself or Hire Some Help? - podcast
When you are planning your book marketing strategy, you will face a tough question: Should I hire a book marketing firm, or should I do my own book marketing? Marketing expert Shelley Rogers Landes discusses the factors to consider when determining whether you should perform your book marketing efforts or hire a professional PR firm. She says that there are a number of things to consider. First, consider how much time and effort you can put into marketing your book. Marketing a book can feel like a full-time job. If you have a lot of time to invest, then marketing your own book is something you should consider. Second, consider your experience. If you have experience as a marketing professional, then doing your own marketing may be a good choice to you. Third, consider your budget. Hiring a professional book marketer costs money, so it must fit within your budget. If you don’t have the time or experience to market your book yourself and you can afford it, hiring a professional is almost certainly the best way to market your book. Consider the time, experience, and money you’re willing to devote to the project, and then make your decision.

Thanks Shelley, I have previous marketing experience with my cleaning company and have a small amount of interaction with radio and a wide range of contacts with potential buyers. I am interested in doing book signings and I am unfamiliar with how that works. If you have any input on that, it would be great. Bella

Shelley, thank you for your suggestions about book marketing. When money is an object (and I believe it's a major object for writers who are counting on MAKING MONEY through royalties), hiring a marketing expert might not be the best route to take. Of course, as you aptly pointed out, time is money, and, if we have enough time to market our own book, this would be an ideal solution to the problem. I have no expertise in marketing, but I'm semi-retired now and I have a lot of time on my hands, so I'm hoping to be able to put that to good use to avoid having to hire a marketing expert to do my work.

Thank you. What would you say is the avarage rate to pay a marketer...I went to see a publisist in Chicago who quoted me a crazy 6000$ per month...another one in New Jersey quoted me 3000$ per month...I'm still researching to find a book marketing company that will be reasonable not take your money and just don't deliver...I was at the Book Expo America in New York and launched my book there but even that was a huge mistake...there was not many authors ..money wasted as I travel from South Africa every time to try and find a marketing company that will give me a reasonable rate for a year. It took me 15. Years to complete my book and I was fully booked as a speaker in Los Angelesvfir a year by just talking about the content in my book....so I need the right publisist/marketer.
