Book Marketing: Do It Yourself or Hire Some Help? - article

There are a number of things you need to consider when you’re trying to decide whether to market your book yourself or hire someone to do it for you. I often hear authors tell me they had no idea how much time, energy, and money it would take to market their books. It’s a full-time job. I’m sure most of us know how easy it is to think you’re going to do some basic research on the internet for half an hour and then look up at the clock and realize you’ve been at it all afternoon. If you have a lot of time for that sort of thing, then maybe marketing your own book is something you should consider. Or if you have experience as a marketing professional and understand how to get your own media contacts, what a good professional press release looks like, and so on, then doing your own marketing may be a good choice to you. But if you don’t have that time or experience and you can afford it, hiring a professional is almost certainly the best way to market your book and to see if it resonates with the target audience. So consider time, consider experience, and consider how much money you’re willing to devote to the project, and then make your decision.

  • Thanks, just picking up tips on how to market my book.
  • Thanks Shelley, I have previous marketing experience with my cleaning company and have a small amount of interaction with radio and a wide range of contacts with potential buyers. I am interested in doing book signings and I am unfamiliar with how that works. If you have any input on that, it would be great. Bella
  • Shelley, thank you for your suggestions about book marketing. When money is an object (and I believe it's a major object for writers who are counting on MAKING MONEY through royalties), hiring a marketing expert might not be the best route to take. Of course, as you aptly pointed out, time is money, and, if we have enough time to market our own book, this would be an ideal solution to the problem. I have no expertise in marketing, but I'm semi-retired now and I have a lot of time on my hands, so I'm hoping to be able to put that to good use to avoid having to hire a marketing expert to do my work.
  • Thank you. What would you say is the avarage rate to pay a marketer...I went to see a publisist in Chicago who quoted me a crazy 6000$ per month...another one in New Jersey quoted me 3000$ per month...I'm still researching to find a book marketing company that will be reasonable not take your money and just don't deliver...I was at the Book Expo America in New York and launched my book there but even that was a huge mistake...there was not many authors ..money wasted as I travel from South Africa every time to try and find a marketing company that will give me a reasonable rate for a year. It took me 15. Years to complete my book and I was fully booked as a speaker in Los Angelesvfir a year by just talking about the content in my book....so I need the right publisist/marketer.
  • Thank you so much Shelley for your great ideas. Will take it to heart always. Author of the book entitled "Tear Drops."
