Discoverability and PR - video

Rusty Shelton, president and CEO of author publicity firm Shelton Interactive, discusses discoverability and PR for authors. What is discoverability in terms of publicity? How do you connect with the right people to get PR? The way that journalists and media in general interact with authors is very different than it was years ago. Does it still work to pitch them with stories? Rusty discusses all of this and offers a great example of how authors can organically enable their own discoverability. He suggests that the best way to get PR is not to pitch directly to journalists, but instead to be interesting, relevant to current events, and able to be found online. Think about the major stories in your topic area and publish a blog post with your expert take on that topic or event.

  • What I really need is a journalist that can promote me. While I am making one or several sales at a time, it sounds to me very chancy when he says, the journalist's approach is, "don't call us, we'll call you." Good for you if you just so happen to be in the right place at the right time if a journalist is looking for your particular topic.
