Determining the Number of Drafts Needed for Completing a Manuscript

Author AE Wasserman advises authors to not always aim for perfection on the first try. If you’re writing a manuscript and want to make everything perfect the first time, you’ll never finish. Instead, get everything you want to say written down; you can always fix it later. If there is a certain idea you want to explore, give beta readers a draft to see if you should continue with that idea. This allows for experimentation in your writing. In the end, you should expect to have as many drafts as it takes to feel comfortable and confident with what you’ve written – then, it’s time to send it over to an editor.
