Some writers are plotters, meaning they outline their story before they start writing. Others are pantsers that forego the outline and just let the story flow. Author, screenwriter, and producer Brandyn Cross believes that without a solid outline, most writers will eventually get stuck, and possibly even abandon a screenplay project. There is a system, he says. If you meticulously outline your screenplay you will discover your plot holes and know what's working and what's not. Cross himself has never experienced writer's block, which he attributes to his extensive outlining. In addition to not getting stuck, the outlining allows him to complete a project much more quickly.
